Location: Colombia
Event: Demonstrations Alert- U.S. Embassy Colombia, May 12, 2021
The U.S. Embassy is aware of continuing demonstrations, unrest, and disruptions throughout Colombia. The nationwide events can cause the shutdown of local roads and major highways, often without prior notice or estimated reopening. Road closures may significantly reduce access to public transportation and airports and may disrupt travel both within and between cities.
We have learned of the following planned demonstrations for May 12, which may block major roads in and out of Bogota and at various locations throughout the city:
0900: National Park to Plaza de Bolivar
Mobilization: Las Mercedes neighborhood court (San Cristobal)
Caracas Avenue with May 1st
Policarpa neighborhood
May 1st Avenue with 10th Race
Olaya Herrera Park
In addition, there are planned concentrations of protesters in key Transmillenio stations throughout the city that have been advertised via social media starting at 0500am.
Protests and disruptions may continue for the several days. Cali continues to report shortages of basic supplies such as gasoline and food. Several cities have seen vandalism, looting, and destruction. Demonstrations have been site to several fatalities and hundreds of injuries across the country.
We are monitoring the protests and will provide relevant information as needed. While most protests remain peaceful, large crowds confronted by police or anti-riot forces may turn violent rapidly. If you need assistance, please contact us by phone or email; see details below.
Actions to Take:
Avoid protest areas.
Monitor local media for updates.
Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
