Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy, Colombia, May 7, 2021
Location: Colombia
Event: The U.S. Embassy is aware of continuing demonstrations, unrest, and disruptions throughout Colombia. The nationwide events have caused the shutdown of local roads and major highways, often without prior notice or estimated reopening. Road closures may significantly reduce access to public transportation and airports and may disrupt travel both within and between cities.
We have learned of the following statuses of the major roads leading into and out of Bogotá:
Bogotá – La Vega (northwest): Total closure in front of Arenas de Bogotá, Km 1
Bogotá – Villavicencio via Chipaque (southeast): Intermittent blockades
Bogotá – Facatativá (west): Open
Bogotá – Fusagasugá (southwest): Intermittent blockades around Los Patios de Soacha
Bogotá – Zipaquirá (north): Total closure westbound at Centro Chía Mall, at Km 8, and at Km 26
Bogotá – Tunja (north): Closures in Tocancipá in both directions.
Protests and disruptions may continue for the several days. In Cali, there are reports of shortages of basic supplies such as gasoline and food. Several cities have seen vandalism, looting, and destruction. Demonstrations have been site to several fatalities and hundreds of injuries across the country.
We are monitoring the protests and will provide relevant information as needed. While most protests remain peaceful, large crowds confronted by police or anti-riot forces may turn violent rapidly. If you need assistance, please contact us by phone or email; see details below.
Actions to Take:
Avoid protest areas.
Monitor local media for updates.
Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
Keep a low profile.
Be aware of your surroundings.
