Its interesting. I was on the fringe of the 'Nerd Herd' when I was in the Navy out in Vallejo, Ca., (actually Mare Island). Anyway, if you got busted and discharged for anything and at least attended DS 'A' school, the companies would sweep you up and start you at about $35,000/year, (that was 1981 dollars). I didn't like the progressive-ness then and I certainly couldn't see me out there now. Even with the promise of some high paying digital job, (I was courted by Silicon Graphics but turned them down because the starting salary didn't meet the cost of living in my eyes.)

I agree that totally autonomous self-driving cars are a long way off, and that the 3-5 year predictions from potential manufacturers are just pipe dreams. But this guy Hotz's claim that he has a self driver powered by a smart phone is a stretch too. Using his prepared vehicle (with whatever modifications) isn't a realistic test. For a more believable demo he should let someone pick a suitable drive-by-wire vehicle at random from a used car lot, hook his stuff up to it and show the result. Did you notice in the video when the pickup truck pulled out in front of his "self-driver," he yelled, "GRAB THE WHEEL," when his system failed to react?? Then he just blew it off as an anomaly. Hotz is still living off of the fact that he cracked an iPhone 13 years ago. BFD. I'm pretty certain that his egotistic attitude is the reason he didn't fit in with Facebook's or Google's "culture." A person like him, who brags about how he is smarter than everyone else usually isn't. If his system is really better than everyone else's, he should just let its performance speak for itself.

The only way self driving cars will be safe anytime soon would be if all cars were self driving. Then they could all be connected into a large network and every car would know where each other was going and would route accordingly. You throw an unknown (manned car) into the mix and it messes with the whole setup.
If you could outlaw all old cars and only license self driving cars it could happen relatively fast.

Here is another interview with him. I find him interesting. Certainly very smart. I also like this guy Lex Fridman and some of his interviews. He recently did one with Eric Weinstein that was good.

If you could outlaw all old cars and only license self driving cars it could happen relatively fast. Outlawing old cars will be very hard to do. The number of automotive enthusiasts who enjoy driving is immense. They consider driving a car to be a God-given right. Maybe when self driving aero cars become the norm it will happen, as the old cars could keep to the surface streets. Eventually individually controlled self driving vehicles will be perfected, but accidents will still happen, even between self drivers. Mechanical failures, blowouts, self driving computer system crashes, etc. will cause problems too. If people are allowed to own self driving cars, will the government force required maintenance?? Many people buy a car, and neglect even basic maintenance. So how long will a self driver be reliable ?? There are a lot of unanswered questions. I may live to see real self driving vehicles, but I don't see it happening in the next 5 years. - JAMES
