This may seem like old hat to some of 'yuse guys' but yesterday I spent the entire day at a large coffee finca in the hills surrounding Ibague. The day began with a jeep ride which picked up me, my fiance and her children at 7am. We spent the next hour traversing 3-4K feet in 3 miles on a switchback road where one wrong move and you would feel the ill effects of gravity! We were greeted by the owner when we arrived at Finca Las Delicias, a woman who purchased the very large finca when she and her husband retired from the Defense Ministry. While waiting for breakfast to be prepared, she showed us the grounds immediately surrounding the house. She told us she raised chickens for eggs and poultry, many herbs growing in her garden, (the smell was delightful!), her local orchard comprised of papaya, lulus, limes, lemons, avacodos, both hass and the larger genus found here in Colombia. We enjoyed a very large typical Colombian breakfast with scrambled eggs, plantains, rolls and rice. After breakfast we went out for a 'hike' with her caretaker leading the way. The path was very steep and I was glad I was in shape, but for being 70 years old, she didn't seem to have any problems. I saw where there wasn't any coffee plants, banana/plantain trees grew, or a citrus tree. We returned to the house and was served Soncocho very well made by the wives of other campasinos who worked other fincas that dotted the hillsides. We then rested and hiked to the 'colegio de campasinos' near the summit. I saw what I thought were electric wires. The lady explained that they were used to transport the coffee down the mountain and transport supplies up instead of using vehicles on a road that was prone to washout.
It should be noted here that with the exception of the rice and the bread rolls and beer, all we ate and drank was grown on the finca. I returned to mi fiance's apartment tired but fulfilled having spent the day among Colombia fauna and flora.
When I return to the US, I will post photos of the day. They are on my cellphone and I have to reduce the resolution to an acceptable level for posting here.
