Scumbuster; Thanks for the info...getting a small amount exchanged at the airport, maybe $400 USD...is that a good idea ? The money exchanges at the airport will typically gouge you and give you the worst exchange rate. Better to use an ATM machine, there are several ATM machines in the Medellín airport on the upper level where all the airline check-in areas are located. The ATM machines will have Spanish and English options. Servibanca's ATM limit is normally 780,000 pesos, Citibank ATM can sometimes be higher, other ATMs may be less. Make sure to let your ATM card bank know you will be in Colombia or the card may not work.

Scumbuster; I'll be flying into Medellin. I know the airport exchange rates aren't good...but it's been a few years since I've been in Colombia. I just know that US dollars won't cut it in the legitimate Medellin market.

Also, If you have any plans to visit Colombia again take at least 200,000 back with you. I always hit the ATM before I leave Colombia so I have COP when I return. I usually try to have from 500,000 to 1 million to take home with me. Then I don't need to worry about finding an ATM for a while.

NEVER LEND MONEY TO A COLOMBIAN!!!!!!!!!!! They ALWAYS view it as a gift, especially if it comes from a foreigner.

How I exchange money is I buy it through AAA travel. I tell the amount and for what country, (Colombia)and it is mailed to my door prior to me leaving. About 11% they get and if it is over $500, shipping is free. Get it in about 3~5 days!

As i do not know how to create a new post--
Today the SSA is increasing .03% pay increase next year--
Now let us do the math--
An ex-pat receives .03% on his social security this year--0% last year-- while Colombia inflation is 6% this year and 6% last year-- or about 16% in 2 years--
What has saved some ex-pats is the devaluation of the peso--however what goes down will eventually come up
Some ex-pats on fixed retirements may well find in the future it might be cheaper to move back to their native Anglo countries etc--and take advantage in the U.S. / or elsewhere Anglo countries / and apply for the same benefits available and received by the deadbeats--immigrants etc--etc--
Or another way to put it--return with the same thought in mind as poor political refugees --and be creative in acquiring--- free money/ free medical / free everything --and not having to work for any of it -- At this point in life shame is a virtue

Wouldnt wanna be a Syrian Refugee for the life of me, no matter how many "Freebies" they get. Life is good!!

Hey! I want to thank you guys for the advice, (I think it was in a different thread), about getting money using my US debit card while in Colombia. The hotel had a Bancolombia ATM in the lobby. I was able to withdraw $300.000 COP. Now that I am home, I checked my account for the charges. Drum roll please, $104.16 USD for the cash, $0.21 for the conversion fee, and $0.83 for the 'cross-boarder' fee! What an eyeopener! Mucho gracias!
