The Dow Jones Industrial Average, DJIA as you said in just an index of the 30 largest capitalized stocks, and not necessarily a representation of the broader S&P500, or Russell 2000. But it is in my opinion, the most often quoted index in terms of market performance in the news. www.investopedia.com/terms/s/sp500.aspI believe there are stocks such as Microsoft that trade on all three indexes. DJIA, S&P500 & the Nasdaq 3,206 even on the dollar/Colombian peso exchange rate. Betting on a Fed December rate hike? finance.yahoo.com/video/fed-survey-shows-88-expect-124300488.html It's most quoted because it moves a lot of points and is more dramatic for the press to report. It is also price weighted so it often reveals very little about the overall market.. I'm betting they raise rates tomorrow, but I don't think they should.. I think the market's prices already have the proposed rate already factored in. Should the "market" be wrong, we'll we all know how the market hates disappointment. "The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is the oldest and most widely known index. It is also the mostly quoted index and often, whether right or wrong, considered the market barometer." www.thebalance.com/what-market-indexes-tell-us-3141365Well so much for todays rally, just "fizzled" away. All indexes have are close to flat, with 45 minutes left to trade. finance.yahoo.com/

The dollar closed at 3,219.99, which I like, need to buy some pesos on the cheap. www.bloomberg.com/quote/USDCOP:CURThe Fed did what the markets expected, raised the rate a quarter of one percent, and changed the outlook for 2019 by reducing the number of proposed rate hikes down to two from three. The market action yesterday, and today was strong buying up to the release of news of the proposed rate increase, and then the market dropped like a rock. Close to a 900 point range in the DJIA. This really isn't unusual market action, typically called buy the rumor, sell the news. All new yearly lows for the major indices. From today's closing prices it will take an 18% increase to reach it's all time high for the S&P500, 15.5% for the DJIA, and apple, AAPL, 45%, but AAPL paid out some dividends November 8, so it would be less of an increase needed if the price was adjusted. I'd be looking for some tax loss selling before the year closes out. Unless it's changed, you can sell a stock for a loss, wait over 30 days and buy it back, and deduct the losses from the gains, if more that $3,000, you can carry the rest forward to deduct from future years, unless it changed for US investors. www.investopedia.com/terms/t/tax_selling.aspBut the best news about the market today, is that it closed.

premarket seems to be a mix this morning but no big movers on my watch list. Bitcoin took a big jump and is over $4000 this morning.

premarket seems to be a mix this morning but no big movers on my watch list. Bitcoin took a big jump and is over $4000 this morning. Bitcoin has been a lousy investment this year, it tanked, crashed, whatever you want to call it. finance.yahoo.com/news/one-since-bitcoin-interesting-203611485.htmlI'm thinking this recent strength is only related to all the liquidation in equities, as known as the "flight to quality" T-bills, bonds, and I guess Bitcoin now show some temporary strength, meaning I don't think the strength has any legs. Still, it's up 10.5% today. The US stock market appears flat to a little to the downside, appears to be looking for stability at this point. Don't see anything that would leave me to believe the so called, "Santa Clause Rally" will take place. No one any longer anxious to be buying the dips now, only sell the rallies. This November/December has been the worst since the great depression I have read, and traditionally from November through April is historically the strongest part of year to be in the market. I for one was looking for a selling climax, but haven't seen what I believe to be it. This could be a new bear market that just chips away at your portfolio like a slot machine. The one bright spot today, is that pesos are cheap at an exchange rate of 3,238.54, and hasn't seen that level since November 28. www.bloomberg.com/quote/USDCOP:CUR

Getting fairly close to loading up on oil ERX. Big profits can be made in these 3* bull ETFs when things turnaround. How low did oil get last time? Low 20's? Got to think low 30's would be a good entry point this time around?

Sedelen, that’s so weird. The Davivienda ATM I used had a different rate than you but I didn’t get charged a fee. You’d think they would be the same all over.

Got 3,246.75 pesos to the dollar yesterday from Davivienda.
Bloomberg shows Friday's closing exchange rate at 3,291.40.
Don't know how Christmas will affect currency trading.
Tomorrow being Christmas eve, I know the New York Stock Exchange will close at noon.

AAPL new 52 week lows in the 149's premarket. AMZN also new 52 week low Ah, Monday Christmas eve and the market is trading, probably a good think it's only trading half a day, as all the indexes are getting a drumming this morning. About the only plus signs I see are Bitcoin, gold, and gold stocks. The dollar giving back some gains today at 3,282.55.

Dollar closed up at 3,295.20. As far as US Markets go, the selloff was brutal, and it was only half a trading day. The Dow down 653 and change, Friday's was bad, but there was no volume, leaving the decline suspect to further selling. www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/dow-dives-653-points-to-below-22000-sandp-500-enters-bear-market-worst-christmas-eve-ever/ar-BBRmC0r?ocid=spartanntpNo doubt there are plenty of bargains out there, but until the relentless selling pressure stops, there won't be any rallies, wouldn't even be surprised if it "crashed!" Seems somewhat more urgent to sell after Treasury Secretary Mnuchin called the 6 top bank CEO's over the weekend to make sure they had the money to cover whatever the markets have to offer. I remember the day after the market crashed in '87, and literally the market died. The market makers did not have cash to buy the securities the sellers were trying to sell, regardless how cheap, then Alan Greenspan stepped in and assured them to continue to operate as normal, the Fed would back up the market makers. finance.yahoo.com/news/u-regulators-tell-mnuchin-nothing-173342099.htmlTrump knows exactly what's wrong with the markets, the Fed. I think personally, this Fed chairman will be on his way out soon. finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-only-problem-economy-fed-160605546.html

I'm about Christmas'd out. Hoping things will slow down (demands on money) after the holidays. But with the favorable exchange rate, might perhaps put a few pesos away, and here as most everywhere, the prices on things will fall in January.

I used to use Western Union in the States, but not all that often, I can't remember their fees, I'm guessing but perhaps 8%. May not be the cheapest way to get money here, but it's does work well and fast.

sedelen said: I think the last time I used it was about 12% The sharemoney is pretty good. It goes directly into her Bancolombia account. Plus she gets a text message when it gets there. It took a while to set up but it works pretty smooth. The other thing I like about it is that they conact you at your designated phone# to enter a 4 digit code to send money. If you don't have the code, the money don't get sent. Kind of keeps the hackers away. (I hope!)
