Colombian Congress Approves Law Making Organ Donation Obligatory
BOGOTA - The Colombian Congress Thursday approved a law that makes organ donation mandatory provided the deceased is an adult and he had not expressed his reservations against it during his lifetime.
"A person has his entire life to say that he does not want to be a donor," Radical Change party legislator Rodrigo Lara, who introduced the bill, told reporters after it secured the Senate's approval.
In case of minors, the parents will have the authority to decide if their organs will be donated after their death.
The bill also makes it clear Colombians will be given priority when it comes to recipients of the organs.
It is estimated just a single donor can save between seven and ten lives and benefit a total of 55 people.
However, the two houses of the Congress differ on certain aspects of the bill and must find a common ground for the law to be sent for presidential approval and come into effect.
The bill was introduced in the Congress in March by Lara who claimed the initiative will respond to the demand for organs by thousands of patients, whose lives can be saved or improved.
According to the National Institute of Health, between January and September in 2013, there were 262 donors, while during the same period in 2012 the number was 298.

Does anyone else find it somewhat disturbing that in a country with so much corruption they make it obligatory for organ donation.

Does anyone else find it somewhat disturbing that in a country with so much corruption they make it obligatory for organ donation. Does the law stipulate that the donor must be deceased?
OK........no problem.......now he is deceased! jajajajajajaja
A bit one-sided!
The bill also makes it clear Colombians will be given priority when it comes to recipients of the organs.
Gringo are welcome to contribute but cannot receive! (Mind you...who would want a Colombian liver?)
