People stare at you? People smile at you? People scowl at you? People abuse or berate you?
I generally speak English with my wife, family and friends at home and when we are out and about. I have had kids and even adults stare at me. I have had lots of smiles and friendly nods and never ever has anyone criticised me for not speaking Spanish in public.
I suppose because there is a push for Colombians to learn English it is not seen as anything impolite or obnoxious to speak English in public........just a curiosity.
Apparently it is not the same in reverse in Australia. A woman travelling on a commuter train was speaking Spanish when talking on her phone and she was verbally abused and berated by a good ole' Aussie yobbo who told her. "We speak English in Australia!"
The funny thing is that the woman who was attacked was born in Australia. Her mother is Chilean and her father is German and she actually speaks many languages. She was speaking with her mother in Spanish because that is what her mother prefers.
A Sydney train has once again become a battleground for racial tolerance after a young woman was subject to a vicious tirade from a fellow passenger.
Natalie Soto, 20, was speaking Spanish to her mother over the phone as she rode a train into the Sydney CBD on Thursday morning.
"My mum just wanted to make sure I had caught the right train. Her English isn't very good so I was speaking to her in Spanish," Ms Soto said.
