Long-lost Spanish gold ship found off Colombia’s Caribbean coast
Colombia president Juan Manuel Santos said Friday that searchers have found the wreck of a Spanish galleon that was sunk more than 300 years ago while carrying a big cargo of gold and precious stones.
A Twitter message from President Juan Manuel Santos said more details about the discovery will be released Saturday. In his tweet, he says: “Great news: We found the galleon San Jose.”
The ship was sunk in an attack by the British in 1708 and has been submerged off the coast of tourism hot spot Cartagena in what is now Colombia near the Rosario Islands. It is believed to have been carrying 11 million gold coins, jewels and 600 people.
The ship, commanded by Admiral Jose Fernandez de Santillan was one of three ships that was on its way to Spain with riches obtained in the Nueva Granada colony, now Colombia.
However, just after having left the port of Cartagena, the ship was intercepted by “The Expedition,” a British ship that opened fire at the galleon, sinking it to its underwater resting place.

The government’s claim on Friday did not shed light on a legal wrangle with Sea Search Armada (SSA), a US-based salvage company which had a longstanding suit against Bogota over ownership of the wreck. SSA said in 1981 it had located the area in which the ship sank.
SSA and the government were partners back then and, following international custom, they agreed to split any proceeds. The government later said any treasure would belong to Colombia.
In 2011 a US court declared the galleon the property of the Colombian state.

Beats me how a little wooden boat can carry 580 tons of anything! Must have been easy to sink.

More about the dispute over WHO found the wreck: Ownership of undersea gold treasure discovered near a Spanish ship that sank more than 300 years ago is making waves. The ship, or galleon, named the San Jose could be worth billions of dollars in lost treasure. The Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History says it discovered the sunken wreck. But an American company says it discovered the ship 30 years ago and owns much of the loot. Colombian President Juan Manual Santos said Saturday that the ship was found by an international team of experts. He would not reveal the ship’s location. But the ship is not located where the U.S. company said it was in the early 1980s, he said.
The sunken treasure includes jewelry and gold coins and could be the largest ever found. Experts believe the cargo could be worth billions of dollars if recovered. An American company called Sea Search Armada says it found the wreck in 1982. Courts in the United States, Colombia and Spain have looked at the dispute. Maritime law usually gives the discoverer of a shipwreck half of the value of the cargo. But in 1984, Colombia passed a law that gave the company only 5 percent of the value. learningenglish.voanews.com/content/colombia-us-company-hold-spar-over-sunken-treasure/3092323.html

I read somewhere that a US court decided against Sea Search Armada and the entire treasure belongs to Colombia. But now Santos said that the San José was found by an international team of experts which most likely wants to be rewarded. The treasure is supposed to be stored in a museum, built just for this purpose. Lets see how long the ladrones need to find a way to rob the treasure.

They say the British sank it. We won it fair and square. It's ours.
