Cofee area- Eje Cafetero- is in the departments of Risaralda, Caldas and Quindio..not Antioquia-though coffee is grown throughout Colombia

Yeah! I actually prefer coffee from Sierra Nevada over that from Quindio! Although, I did like those Castillo beans I got when I was in Medellin last time.

These travel articles make me cringe! I first discovered Jardín 10 years ago;it was a quaint, sleepy little pueblo and now with these travel pieces and forums, the town's popularity has grown.Soon it will end up like Salento;overun by tourists.

Now coffee;it was tough finding a good cup of coffee in Colombia, most if not all of the best coffee beans were exported.Until recently most Colombians drank bacilos (low grade coffee beans)coffee haciendas and a few smaller farms found they could get more money by roasting and sell coffee internally. With the internet it makes selling coffee a global economy. Don't even mention Starburnt or Nestlé Nespresso;these 2 have destroyed Colombia's coffee culture. For years they bought up and exported the best beans and paid a pittance to local farmers AAA bonus (5k - 50k) imagine how much money they make from these single serving pods.

Cupping Characteristics For many years Colombian coffee was described as “one type”. But perceptions are changing, with several distinct types and sub-types being identified by coffee aficionados. This is what makes the conversation interesting: the diversity of perceptions related to the Colombian cup profiles… Colombian coffee flavour profiles: Southern Coffees - Lasting and floral aromatics, very complex and multidimensional cups, bright and juicy acidity, solid body, balanced with a clear, refined, sweet and delicate aftertaste Northern Coffees - Delicate and soft cups with an intense an exotic nutty aroma and flavor. Coffee with moderate to high body, discrete acidity and clean long lasting aftertaste. Main Coffee Axis - Floral aromas, with a pleasant balance between creamy body and nice acidity, well balanced coffee with fruity flavor, and slight herbal almost spicy notes.

I tried that Nespresso crap at my hotel in Poblado. I thought, "What the hell are they issuing this kind of horse-turd stuff in the coffee capital of the world?" I like that, Starburnt! Sums it up from what I have heard. The fact that they are hiring 10K refugees instead of my countrymen, gives me another reason not to patronize that shit-hole!

The first time I went to Jardin was about 8 years ago. If I remember correctly we stayed in a nice little hotel and paid 15,000 pesos breakfast included. The owner then invited us to their farm for lunch, I didn't see many other tourist.

I have been back twice and both times I shared the hotel with tour groups;one was a bunch of older birders who woke up the hotel at 4:30 am,as they clomped down the stairs yabbering about their bird bucket lists. We were invited to visit an out of town finca by one of our young Colombian friends;he opened a coffee shop on plaza's edge, his mom owns the candy factory (Dulces del Jardín)
