billyb Was he targeted specifically because of who he is or he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time?

It was kind of both. He was with a group of 6 friends, who were puddle hopping their way up Choco beaches in ultralites. It seems like an employee at the hotel they stayed at one night signaled the FARC as to which beach they would land in the next day. The FARC were waiting for them, and let the others go and kept my cousin and another person in the group who was a doctor.

I had a cousin kidnapped by the FARC in a Choco beach a while back. Billyb, is your cousin still missing or did they release him and how much was the ransom?

They released him after 6 months of negotiations.

Recently I spent 8 days near the Irotama;on a beach a few miles in the other direction. The Costal Azul appears near the airport;the jets take off in that direction over the ocean...jets roaring overhead well say no more. That section of the beach is a little far from restaurants or nightlife...Rodadero being the closest. There is a little shopping center on the highway in front of Zuana Beach Resort;Carulla,Crepes y Waffles,Bogota Beer,El Corral. Here are a few other places in that general area. www.onetime.com/hotels?talid=297484&property=1181043&mcid=18305&taparam=EOTGoogleCA_K150668882_A14659501148_NS& I lived two years in that area (Pozos Colorados), close to Bello Horizonte where Zuana and Irotama are. Probably the most calm and clean beaches in Santa Marta with various 5 star resort type hotels. I would nevertheless prefer to rent an apartment there as I personally think that Zuana, Irotama and others are a bit overpriced for what they offer. The small shopping center is indeed nice and needed there as at least 10 minutes to Rodadero. In Rodadero unfortunately filthy beaches, especially during the season. Rodadero South is a bit better, but not such nice beaches as Bello Horizonte or Pozos Colorados. Palomino lately also developed but other type of venues and high waves.

Bello Horizonte had a beautiful pristine beach prior to the coal port setting up shop next door. The beach was contaminated with coal dust and the fish population started taking a nose dive.Things are starting to come back;but progress will end up filling in the spaces. We stayed near Pozos;near a green zone, sit on the patio oceanfront...feeding canaries banana and sipping my Sierra dark roast tinto. Walk the beach in the morning in search of fresh seafood for lunch;stop to watch the fisherman pull their nets.
Enjoy it while you can this won't last.

I have just booked a trip to Bahia Solano in June. It will be my fourth trip. There are basically two tourist beach destinations reached from the airport, El Valle 45 minutes in Jeep or Playa Huina about the same time in launcha. My most recent visit about six years ago was to Playa Huina Where I stayed at Hotel "Mr Jerry". He was a Dutchman who came to Colombia many years ago . He had everything at his lodge, scuba, deep sea fishing, sailboards, jungle hikes, you name it. Unfortunately he passed away a few years ago and now his Colombian wife runs it...how well she runs it now I don't know. On my trip next month I'm going back to El Valle where the beach looks like this at low tide: The tides are strong and it is quite unsafe to enter the water at high tide for the intensity of the waves. My favorite Chocó destination however is Nuquí. It is south of Bahía Solano along the coast and a little harder to get to but absolutely worth it if you're looking for jungle and sea. Here is the beach at Piedrapiedra Lodge on the coast: And here is the jungle with clear running stream:

buenopues Thanks for posting. This area of Colombia is in my top 3 remaining places to visit. Have you done any jungle treks or river kayaking there at all?

No, no overnight trekking just did the day hike through the jungle at Nuquí two times. Don't know what rivers would be good for kayaking. The only real river I've seen in person there is the Rio Atrato that flows past the capitol of Chocó, Quibdó. It's a big slow moving river with a lot of traffic. I think if you try any longish distance trekking or river kayaking in most parts of Chocó though you'd be setting your self for a bruisin' since all the bad guys, FARC, ELN and Bacrim are well represented throughout that department. Now that I think of it though a Colombian tourist told me at Playa Huila about an overnight trek into the jungle where he and his girlfriend spent the night at a small Indian settlement so I think there are possibilities. Guided of course!

Day trekking in that area of Colombia would be fine for me.

A couple more shots showing the beach at El Valle (Bahía Solano) at low tide. When I first visited about sixteen years ago I thought well this is about as far from the world as you can get and still be in it. The hotel I stayed at had it's own generator for power as did the discoteca but the hotel's broke down. The owner said there was a German engineer in the village who could fix it but we'd have to wait 'til he was sober. Sure enough he came by the next day, sober and got it running. At low tide there are large pools among the rocks on the beach you can bath in. Good for non swimmers afraid of the ocean like the chica in the picture:

You ought to see it from the surface! I was too young to appreciate the different color aversions in the water as we cruised the Carribean and the Atlantic. We were somewhat limited to how shallow we could go. Since we had about a 40' draft!!
