Halloween is a huge event in north America;statistics have it raking in $7 billion in the U.S. alone. No longer is it a kid's event with adults dressing up trying to out do each other, provocatively too I might add. Now Colombia has seemingly embraced it as they do with anything American. It's mostly an adult party night;recently kids are donning costumes for school and later head for the malls where candy is given out.Do any of you see this trend expanding in your barrios and towns? Do the kids go around to houses - tricker treating?

I was in Zipa this morning and every single kid was dressed up. All the little girls were princesses and all the little boys were super heroes.......and the really funny thing is that they don't change when they grow up Jajajajajajajajajajaja.

Strangely enough halloween became really popular in the UK only in the the last 20 years or so. We celebrate Bonfire Night on November 5th and recently there has been a move away from promoting it, mainly due to the high number of kids burnt in firework accidents every year, and a push to celebrate halloween where the emphasis has always been on dressing up rather than throwing fireworks at each other or pushing them through letterboxes to burn some poor souls house down.
I was in the north of Bogota earlier today and it was like a Tim Burton movie as the offices kicked everyone out for the weekend.

We didn't know anything about Halloween when I was a kid. It has gradually crept into the Aussie culture because of all the American shows on TV. Is there actually a reason for it?

All Hallows' Eve or all saints eve is a Christianized feast influenced by Celtic harvest festivals;Christian pagans no doubt. We were not saintly kids, especially the older we got...Helloween was more like it.
