Thanks, for the heads-up. We always use Loma Escobero when visiting family in Envigado. The security there runs hot and cold... but I was told while back, when I started using Loma Escobero, that it has a history of assaults and robberies by bandas. Knock on wood, haven't had a problem yet.

Always ride the moto up and down it - but during the day - never at night , great road for a moto.

I hope Envigado & Police follow through with this. I love the drive on Escobero, even though in some spots it gets hairy. There is much less traffic and hassle to use Autopista Bogota, Las Palmas or Los Balsos. I usually drive it in the day, too. But once in awhile, we'll get a late start from Envigado, and leave around 8:30 - 9:00 pm. Even though I realize I am taking my chances, I still do it.

We used to have a house up on Escobero and I would drive that way all the time. One day I went to Retiro and everything was fine, my neighbor was going to meet us there and was 5 minutes behind-they got robbed at gunpoint. After that I would go down Escobero and take Balsos. There are a 100 signs about wild animals on Escobero but they are never actually seen. Maybe the should replace those signs with pictures of ladrones.

I agree, why not post new signs with pictures of robbers with guns, there's probably more of them than any wild animals around.

I see mostly mountain bikes there. As a matter of fact, that is pretty much what I have seen people riding all over in Colombia. No road bikes or cyclecross's, (what I ride). 100% safe? Suffice to say, I don't think anyplace is a 100% safe, (crime perspective). Nothing in that video gave me rise not to keep an eye out for something, especially in Colombia. The lack of car traffic is refreshing though. BTW, I was told that the reason the women in Manizales don't have the (ahem) 'Colombian Posterior', is because of all the hills they have to walk up and down there!

elex- your video reminds me why I ride a moto and not a bike, a little twist of the throttle and I am up the hill.
I do see a lot of road bikes around Medellin, especially on the weekends - lots of groups - heading up las Palmas towards Rio Negro area.
In Envigado they ride up to Parque Solado - a more manageable ride, but starting from Ave Las Vegas - it is all up hill- can't think of anywhere that is flat.
A side note - maybe someone can tell me ( or confirm) what I saw, a dude in business attire riding a large beach style cruiser bike ( with gears) through traffic on ave Poblado - he was pedaling only moderately, traffic was moving about 20 miles an hour - and he went buy me seemingly without any effort - did a double take - looked and listened for an engine - nothing - he was pedaling - he was either Lance Armstrong's Colombian cousin or there was some sort of electrical assist that I could not see.

I had the nice views in Pacho too, but that's like a 4 lane highway compared to the trails I was running. If I get over that way I will have to check it out.

That was filmed quite a while ago, before the road through Milan and up to Cerra d'Oro was rebuilt. It is a lot more comfortable today and the parked cars are all in bays.

My wife was just chatting with an amiga in Envigado. Her friend asked if she had heard about the attacks on Loma Escobero, and then the friend went on to explain how her cousin got wrapped up into the attack. Apparently, while descending the mountain, she came upon the attack while still in progress. The friend braked hard, did a K-turn, but took a bullet in the rear quarter panel in the process. She escaped, but damaged a tire rim in the process. She's thankful to be alive. As much as I hate driving into the city, I think I will be using Via Las Palmas now when going into Envigado.

I've been using Via Las Palmas to get to Medellin and Envigado since news of banditos on Loma Escobero... and the drive is getting old fast. Any more news?

I'm sure Elex will back me up here, the women in Manizales in general have great "posteriors". A cab driver told me the walking up and down all the hills was the reason.

I was told that they did not have the typical 'bubble butt' was because of all the hills they walk on. As opposed to the women in Medellin.

The original post was about a crime, so I guess you guys stayed on topic. For me, those rock hard booty's from walking up and down mountains are a crime(they look nice but not much fun), might as well be in a prison cell.

To be blunt, you were told wrong, or I'm guessing misheard the guy. They have the typical bubble butt's in spades, and the kicker is that their's are natural as opposed to plastica. Think about it. All the women in that region (Medellin, Manizales, Pereira, Armenia) have basically the same genetics. The only differentiating factor is the up/down streets in Manizales. Now, would all that walking up and down hills their entire lives shrink their asses? Or make them bigger/firmer/stronger? The answer is obvious.

I think a nice firm round ass is plenty fun on a woman. But then again I've never been in a prison cell.

Well, regardless, I like 'em all!! And my original post was about the bike riding on that trail in Manizales being safe as compared to the route in Envigado! (There! I tied all the loose ends, [pun intended!] )

Good news! My wife took the car down Loma del Escobero today without getting attacked or robbed. She told me that both foot and motorized police are now patrolling the road.

My wife and her amiga returned from Envigado in the late afternoon today. Once again they used the Loma Escobero route. Unfortunately, the ride did not go as well as yesterday. Near the La Mayoria hairpin turn in Envigado, a guy on a moto started tailing them...and then a second moto followed not far behind. She slowed down to let them pass, but they remained behind her. She said both of the guys' faces were hidden by scarves. My wife sped up, and maintained a steady speed of 70 - 80 km up the hill. The road was empty, and not a single cop in sight. When they reached the Terpel station at the crest of the mountain, there was a small huddle of motorized cops 50 meters beyond the station. My wife said when the two motos saw the cops, they quickly peeled off into the gas station. My wife got behind a small convoy of trucks and stayed there until the tolls at the end of the road. She dodged a bullet today. I'm glad she made it back home unharmed. It appears Loma Escobero is still hot.

What a sorry-assed state of affairs!!!! You can't even drive anywhere without the thought of being terrorized by punks!!! I really wish this country would come to its senses and reign in these turdball's!!!! You can't even drive anywhere for fear of being robbed by jagoffs on motos!

My wife and I were out near La Ceja yesterday and late in the afternoon(around 4:30pm we debated whether to come back down Escobero (it's faster for us and would have avoided traffic), I almost came down that way but something made me say no and we came back down Balsos.

Good move. That is around the time my wife was coming up Loma del Escobero. Not being able to use Loma del Escobero is a major inconvenience for us as we usually head for Envigado when going to the city. We don't like Las Balsos either for a lot of the same reasons... so we'll be using Las Palmas from now on.

There was a Taxi in front of me that kept slowing down and 2 motos behind me that had black helmets with their faces covered. I wanted to pass the Taxi but with so many curves I didn't have the opportunity. I slowed down a few times but the motos would not pass-I thought the motos were going to rob me with the Taxi helping them-I was really nervous. Finally I got to the light at Inferior and the 2 motos starting coming up on each side of the car-I thought my day had come. I then looked over through the window and both of the moto riders were probably the hottest girls I have seen in Medellin-they just smiled and went on their way.
