Being able to experience a place, and to discover so much of its past, is what makes Colombia a unique travel destination. When planning that essential trip, be sure to include some of the obligatory stops on the map, which will take you back in time to an age of exploration, conquest and colonialism.
We begin in Monguí, beneath a faint morning sky and looking at the 16th century Basilica of Nuestra Señora which graces one of the largest squares in Colombia. A few days later, several hours from Monguí, in the desert of La Candelaria, which encompasses the colonial town of Villa de Leyva, we cuddle up in woolly ruanas to stave of the chill of a windswept paradise.
Even though many visitors to Colombia opt for Villa de Leyva and Monguí – two towns steeped in history and nestled in the Boyacá highlands – they now share a more contemporary bond, that of being included in the government program of Red Turística de Pueblos Patrimonio, or National Network of Patrimonial Towns.
Like Villa de Leyva, Santa Cruz de Mompox is a necessary destination when exploring the coast. These jewels in the country’s tourism portfolio are extensively covered by guides, home to important festivals throughout the year and increasingly coveted for their intangible connection to an age of colonialism.

As my father-in-law is from Sogomoso----have been to Mongui--
The road to Mongui out of Sogomoso--out of Sogogoso proper every 1 mile are "large" speed bumps (to keep large trucks from speeding) and hell on a B-mer--then after this the road is curving all the way----there no gas stations in Mongui once you leave Sogomoso --so have gas
There are 2 churches in Mongui----the large one in the photo with the large empty square--then a smaller original one a block away--
A small scenic town--This place is absolutely in the Mddle of nowhere---

waterloo, tell us more about Sogamoso. I understand Sogamoso goes back in the Chibcha´s cosmogony, to the creation of the Sun. In the valley of Iraca (or Sogamoso) the Sun was born.It was a religious center of the Muiscas,Indians of the Cundinamarca and Boyaca highlands. There is an Archaeological Park built in the place that occupied the necropolis Temple of the Sun.

Unfortuneately have not visited the park----next time will tell my outlaws we will go there-- I typically just follow the clan in survival mode--not knowing their next plan of events --however after all these years have pretty much figured out they do not know their next plan either----the most important issue is always go in your own car traveling in trail with a Colombian family

I spent two weeks in Sogamoso last year, teaching 4 guys from Surinam how to operate and maintain Cat excavators. All I can tell you is that it's cold in the mornings and rains a lot. Nicolas Cage to play me in the movie.
