Last night around 9PM (EST), I was looking for something to watch other than the 'Blah, Blah, Blah' Hillary Clinton, 'Blah, Blah, Blah' Donald Trump. So I saw this program on the National Geographic channel. They had a 2 hour program where they went behind the scenes at El Dorado, and what they look for in the way of smuggling, both in and out of the country. They showed how they caught several people trying to smuggle cocaine out. But they also tagged some Chinese people for bringing in 'contraband', (sounds like another thread? ) I thought it was neat but I couldn't help but think that they were tipping their hand to the drug smugglers by talking about the clues they use to pull people out of line for thorough investigation. On a side note, they did show the dog that 'hit' on my luggage when I was coming in to Bogota. The security guy asked me if I was bringing in any money and the amount. I told him what I had and he let me move along! But it was interesting none the less!

If they want to get contraband they need to be checking shipping containers. Lets face it.. How much can you actually bring in in a suitcase. The businesses bring in shipping containers of nock offs from China. Drugs and money is a bit of a different story. You can carry a huge amount of $ or drugs in a suitcase.

wildstubby that show is called Alerto Aeropuerto and is one of my regular shows. It cracks me up when the people get caught. They always say, "That's not mine!" or, "I didn't put that in there! Even after they go through the big human X-ray machine and they are shown the evidence they still say, "No .....I am not carrying drugs." They are usually crying by the end of the show.

I love the show too. I "smuggled" 10 kg of chocolate in. Is chocolate a problem? I'm pretty sure you can bring as much as you want as long as it is not commercial quantities. I think 10 kg covers my personal use for about a month.:-) Smoked salmon may be OK too, as it may be considered to be cooked food. On the other hand, the Russet potatoes that I bring in almost certainly fall on the wrong side of the law, though inspectors have looked right at them and let them go. Though, I did get my cat food confiscated.

There actually is a process where you can apply to bring it in, but you have to do it five days in advance and I decided it's not worth the hassle. I figure that I'm spending about $50 a year more on cat food here than I would bringing it in. The cats are old, so I won't have to do it for too much longer. I actually got caught because there was some perfectly legal gardening equipment in the bag that looked funny on the scanner, and they only noticed the cat food when the luggage was opened. I could probably go back to bringing it in and just figure on getting caught one out of twenty times, but the killer was the 30 minutes I had to wait while they filled out the confiscation paperwork and I don't want to sit through that again.

Im in the same situation. Our cat is 19 yrs old. But he has been limping around for 5 years now.. LOL I think he is going to out last me. I only give him 1/4 or a can each morning to supplement his dry food so I don't need too many. If he is still around in September he will be heading back to Colombia for a second time. He probably has flown more miles than most people. LOL He is very spoiled and only eats one certain kind, so I will probably bring down about 30 cans. They do sell what he likes in Colombia @ about 4x the cost. I have yet been caught so I will continue. Split up between 4 suitcases.

I was bringing in dry cat food. Canned food might not have the same restrictions, since the process of canning pasteurizes it.
