I'd like to make a recommendation to anyone looking for a place in Villa de Leyva. My gf and I decided at the last moment to take an overnight trip in Villa De Leyva. I called a few places including Posada de San Antonio where she stayed at before with family. I found both cheaper and more expensive and settled on San Antonio. They offered me a standard room for $276k but upsold me to a Suite with balcony for $316k.
Very beautiful place, incredibly decorated and nice modern bathroom. The only downside are the paper thin walls. If you or the neighbors are "loud"'it could be a problem (or entertaining). Our balcony overlooked a nice park and I did get woken up by some loud people there talking BS at 2am but it's all good. Very nice breakfast (included),about two blocks from the plaza and parking is included 1/2 block away.

$100/night is out of my Colombian budget;what is it about these places once the tripadvisor crowd discovers them prices go through the roof.I get it but I will go to lesser known towns to avoid the heard.

Villa de Leyva has been on my to do list. Accommodations are averaging about $70 US per night for the month of June... apparently very popular with tourists. Thinking about driving there... it's about 9 hours from Rionegro, and a 3 hours drive by rental car from El Dorado Airport. Has anyone made the drive?

It's a nice drive. On the way there you can stop on Raquira. A very picturesque town that is considered the "artesanía" capital of Colombia. Very touristy and now looks Disney Worldish.
The highways in Boyacá are much better than the ones in Cundinamarca.
Outside Villa de Leyva you can find an archeological site that the Indians (I believe Muiscas) built and full of penises.

I wonder if the Indians built a "companion" site... LOL. 9 hours is a long, long trip on Colombian roads. I would like to find a place roughly midpoint to rest.

@vago,go midweek;less traffic and room prices might be a little less. Maybe Villeta would make a good stopover;I'll look over the map and see what else is on the way.

Have you made this drive, Gallito? I was thinking of going towards the end of the month while school was out so we could take our niece... but then I realized everyone else will be thinking the same... LOL. Appreciate your advice.

Great drive from Bogota with lots of traffic and 4 tolls.Do not go to Tunja take the cut off it saves atleast 45 mins.As for Villa de Leyva the locals are rude which you cant really blame them with all the tourist that show up.The tourists walk down the middle of every street. The area is dry and rocky basicly a ugly place. Most of the resturants all have a so called chef so they are costly for what you get but have had some good food there.
