Hey the thread says it all. I'll probably be there in about 2 weeks. I have been told that Poblado is where the usual complement of gringos go. I'm open to suggestions.

A viable option to a hotel is to rent a furnished apartment, there are hundreds in El Poblado and many can be nicer and cheaper than the hotels. You can find on Airbnb, Casacol, The Apartment Medellín and others.
Some of the better hotels in El Poblado IMHO include Dann Carlton, Park 10 and Sites.

I used Airbrb on a recent trip to Peru and got a great furnished apartment with ocean view for $38 night. Internet TV the works.

Do you need to be near other gringos? 3. Are you looking to be close to the "action"? 4. Are you looking for peaceful R&R? 5. Is there some place you need to be near during your time in Medellin? 6. Will you be bringing company?

My only suggestion would be to ditch the car, if you were thinking of getting one. Too much hassle, and taxis, uber, are cheap. Don't have to worry about drinking and driving.

@vago said: 1-No 2-Not really necessary although I do think there is safety in numbers 3-Maybe close to some good restaurants. I'm not looking for a quick 'hook-up'. Believe it or not, I am actually going to meet a woman, who I have been friends with 3 years but never met. Our differences are such that we wouldn't make a good couple, but have become each other's 'confidant'. 4-Maybe a little quiet in the morning. I lived on an aircraft carrier for 5 years and slept just below the flight deck. I learned to sleep with F-14's, A-6's/-7's taking off above me. However, I understand that the national anthem of Colombia includes the simultaneous release of airbrakes at 5:30~6:00 AM. And they play it every day!! I can't get used to is. 5-No. This is my first time there and want to attempt to take in as much as I can in 3 days. 6-"Be prepared" is the Boy Scout's motto. If the opportunity presents itself, I would like to do so without getting 'gigged' with a 'pimp fee'!
I like the idea of the AirBNB but I think a little reconnaissance is needed first. Maybe next time if this becomes a preferred destination.

I have been reading up on the Art Hotel;the art concept set's it out from the rest.Hotel Diez uses a thematic decoration scheme on each of its floors;each floor incorporates artesanias from different regions of Colombia.

Greetings fellow gringos!, (can I say that?) Well I finally made it to the 'City of Eternal Spring'! What an awesome view coming down into the ciudad! All I could think of was traveling into an extinct caldera like in Naples, Italy. I'm only here for 3 days. Tonight I'm going out with a friend. One thing I would like to try is Toucan Café. Anything else or good places to eat, (yeah, I'm opening up a can of worms on that one!)or see/experience while here? I'm in the NH Collection Royal Medellin, (its where my travel agent put me on short notice). If possible, I would be will to buy/swill some curvezas a few of youins, (PA Dutchy-speak)!

I'm about an hour away from Medellin (not too far from the airport).

I can see your hotel from my balcony. What do you want to eat? Close or with a taxi? I posted here several places I like to eat. colombiaconnection.freeforums.net/thread/1057/moving-medellin

I have an appointment with dos amigas. We are meeting in a park in El Poblado, (the name escapes me now). I have told her I want to accomplish 3 goals. 1) Get a unique gift for my mother, (she is 92!); 2) Score some coffee that is unique to the area, (Subtle differences between Sierra Nevada and Antioquia); 3) Get a picture from the top as we descend down into Medellin! That sight is nothing short of awesome! However, with tormentas ever so close, it may be difficult accomplishing all three!

I know this thread is a little stale but I want to apologize for not being able to get together with some of you fellow gringos. I had three lovely 'rosas' give me the tour of the city. I know this much, (I'd look good in a beret), I am going to return to Medellin and spend some more time. Perhaps take the afternoon tour of the coffee farm conducted by Toucan Café. I realy had a nice whirlwind tour. Need more time though. Thanks for all the offers!
