Miraflores, Colombia is one of those places where the trip to get there from Bogotá is impressive . A little off the beaten path keeps it from being a tourist place. I found a blog written in 2013 that does a good job a describing the trip, the place and a little of its history. Miraflores – Vale la Pena (Worth the Effort)

Shhhhhhhh. Don't talk about it or the tourists will go, it will cease to be "off the beaten path", and will turn into the typical bunghole that tourism turns every place into.

Miraflores sounds like a great place to visit if you like 'exploring'. búfalo it is an unfortunate fact of life that 'paradise' becomes 'bunghole' after it is discovered by tourists. What is the answer?

Not to advertise it at all. Or at least not say it's a paradise and then contribute to it's downfall by "improving" it. Let the bad news of Colombia reign on to keep the masses away!

@buffalo it is a real conundrum. Should we (expats living in or visiting Colombia) be entirely selfish and keep quiet about the things we have seen, the places we have discovered etc. or should we share our experiences with the world so that others may also enjoy our 'paradise'?
Personally, I tend to agree with you. Keep my mouth shut for the sake of Colombia......but is it really a benefit to Colombia if it is not overrun by hoards of gringo tourists. Tourists bring money and help the economy. That is good for Colombia, isn't it?
I have some close friends that have made it their life ambition to spread the word about all the positive things about Colombia. They encourage people to visit Colombia. If that is what they want then good for them and of course everyone has the right to their own opinion. Perhaps I am too selfish?
Anyone else have an opinion?

Do Both spread the word and be selfish.....
Do spread the word about Colombia and how nice it really is.
Do Not say anything about the area you live or places you like to visit often.

I think it's only right to spread the word about both good and bad in Colombia, the bad will never change if it's brushed under the carpet and Colombia is a big enough place that eventually the tourists will be here anyway.

Tourists will "help" the economy, but they also bring high prices, destroy the local culture as well as the scenery (hotels, etc). Not to mention generally cheezing up he place.

Usually I like expats better because they tend to not change the place too much. I mean aside from mas influx of course. But a few here and there no biggie.

I think expats are better for Colombia than tourists. We spend more money (over time)and our money is spread more evenly. We pay impuestos. We pay bills (gas, electric etc.), we buy groceries, spend money in our own community etc.
Having said that, I don't particularly want an influx of expats any more than I want an influx of tourists. Now I really am showing my selfishness.
Perhaps ALL the tourists and ALL the expats can ALL go to Medellin. The weather is great - on windy days that blow the smog away. Lots of new buildings - that don't always fall down. Traffic is great - at 3 am. It is crime free - unless you leave the house. Lots of people speak English - because it is already gringolandia.

I think Pacho should be a cautionary tale for Colombia

Yup, they'll kill you in Pacho and Quindío. It's actually a popular saying in Colombia, note the rhyme and all.
Medellín i the best of all of Colombia just as long as you stay inside the city limits. Overall it's probably better to just take a google map tour and stay safe in butt-plug Idaho.
